A watercolour on paper by the artist John Urwin, signed and dated J. URWIN -’90- in the lower-left corner. The composition depicts the ocean liner Mauretania being guided by several paddle tugboats on the River Tyne, set against a hazy industrial background featuring cranes and chimneys. The work is executed with a muted colour palette. The piece is housed in a gilt-finished wood frame with a double-layered neutral mat and protective glass. The reverse of the frame features handwritten inscriptions identifying the subject as Tugs on the Tyne and Mauretania 1907 on the Tyne. A printed biographical label for the artist is also present on the reverse, detailing his education at Newcastle University and his career in Bishop Auckland.
