The charger, dating to the Meiji period, features a central medallion with a dynamic four-clawed dragon on a blue ground, encircled by geometric borders and a wide outer band depicting two opposing phoenixes (ho-ho birds) on a midnight-black ground. The reverse displays a traditional blue scale pattern. The first small dish, also Japanese Meiji period, depicts a butterfly and flowering branches on a turquoise ground with a fine wirework scroll (karakusa) pattern to the cream-coloured reverse. The final item is a Chinese late Qing to early Republic period dish with floral sprays on a cobalt blue ground and a green scalloped border, marked CHINA to the apple-green base. No maker marks are present on the Japanese items. Dimensions: Charger diameter 30cm, small dishes diameter 10cm.
