This collection features two notable examples of Japanese chirimen-gami (crepe paper) ephemera alongside several small decorative objects. The primary items are two woodblock-printed crepe paper calendar books titled Monthly Changes of Japanese Street-Scenes, published by T. Hasegawa of Tokyo in 1901 and 1902. These publications are iconic examples of Meiji-period export art, designed to appeal to the Western fascination with Japanese culture and the Japonisme movement. The 1901 edition includes detailed interior woodblock scenes such as Illuminations and Fireworks on the Sumida river on a dark night in July and A Sudden Shower during the Sanno Festival at Kanda for June. The 1902 edition features a cover illustration of a woman in a kimono carrying a tray. The 1901 cover bears the publisher imprint: T. Hasegawa, Publisher, Tokyo. Accompanying the calendars is a small Satsuma-style miniature vase decorated with figures and moriage enamel, a square-shouldered polychrome vase featuring a dense karakusa scrolling vine ground with peony blossoms, two hand-painted decorative eggs, and a small dark-stained carved figure depicting a seated deity on a lotus-style base. Calendars approximately 150mm x 105mm.
