John Chambers (British, 1852-1928), pure watercolour on paper with fine pencil underdrawing. This late 19th-century topographical work depicts a narrow architectural passage in Whitby, featuring historic stone buildings with smoking chimneys and a lone figure hauling a small rowing boat in the foreground. The piece is signed John Chambers in the lower right and inscribed with the title and date Tin Goat. Whitby. 1889. to the lower left. The work is executed on wove paper and is presented in a dark-stained wood frame with a gilded inner slip and a cream-coloured mount. The verso retains a typed descriptive label and a handwritten presentation note dated 1977. Sight size: Dimensions unavailable – no ruler present in photographs.
