Auction 8th December - Antiques, Jewellery, Militaria, Coins, Vinyl, Toys, Ceramics, Collectables & More
This lot comprises three items: a large, purple fabric-covered commonplace book, a smaller green and gold patterned autograph album, and a loose pencil drawing. The primary commonplace book, dating from at least WWI through WWII, features a diverse collection of pen and ink sketches, pencil drawings, and watercolor illustrations, interspersed with numerous handwritten entries, signatures, poems, and addresses. Its contents include WWI military caricatures dated 1917-1918 (e.g., “Allister 9 Sep. 1917”), architectural renderings such as Bishopthorpe Palace Gate, York, stippled portraits, and WWII-era artwork depicting German aircraft (marked with Balkenkreuz) and a naval cartoon dated “Aug 3rd 1941” (signed F. W.). A watercolor illustration of violets dated March 1917 is also present. The smaller autograph album primarily contains mid-20th century signatures of notable British figures, including footballers Jackie Milburn and Tom Finney, and entertainers such as Wee Willie Harris and “Pinky + Perky the TV piglets” with their puppeteers Jon and Maria Miller. The loose drawing is a detailed pencil sketch of a British biplane (marked K-2109, likely a Fairey Gordon), consistent with the interwar or early WWII period.
