Auction 8th December - Antiques, Jewellery, Militaria, Coins, Vinyl, Toys, Ceramics, Collectables & More
A matching pair of Japanese ceramic vases, exhibiting features typical of Satsuma ware from the late 19th or early 20th century. Each vase has an hexagonal foot, a globular body, and a tapering neck with a flaring rim. The primary decoration consists of cream-colored panels with a fine crackle glaze, depicting phoenixes amidst scrolling floral motifs rendered in polychrome enamels, raised white ‘moriage’ dots, and extensive gilt detailing. The shoulders and neck feature a rich cobalt blue ground with intricate gilt scrolling foliage and stylized floral medallions. The rim and base are finished with a reddish-brown glaze and gilt patterns. The interior of the neck is a pale crackle glaze. The underside of one vase bears a blue four-character seal mark, partially obscured by modern felt pads, which translates to ‘Satsuma-yaki’ (薩摩燒), alongside a handwritten ’30’.
