‘The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes: The Novels’ series by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, edited with notes by Leslie S. Klinger. Both hardbound books list ‘A Study in Scarlet, ‘ ‘The Sign of Four, ‘ ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles, ‘ and ‘The Valley of Fear’ as their contents. The first volume features a brown dust jacket illustrating Sherlock Holmes next to a roped chair. The second volume is a red cloth-covered book, clearly marked with the Roman numeral ‘III’ on its front, depicting Holmes holding a spear. An interior page confirms its identity as part of ‘The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes’ series.
