Mid 20th Century, Shōwa Period (circa 1950s-1970s). A rectangular Japanese serving tray (O-bon) finished in deep black lacquer (urushi) or lacquer-effect material. The piece is decorated in the maki-e style, utilizing metallic and polychrome pigments to depict a dynamic scene of nine (9) flying tsuru (cranes) soaring above stylized, cresting waves. The composition is highly decorative, with five cranes rendered in gold, two in silver or pewter pigments, and two in reddish-pink. The waves are executed in fine, horizontal linear work utilizing gold and reddish-brown pigments, creating a sense of movement. The tray features integrated cutout handles on the short sides and is bordered by a continuous gold-colored band. The reverse of the tray is finished in a textured, speckled reddish-brown metallic lacquer, characteristic of commercial nashiji-nuri style applications of the period. No signature, seal, or tomobako (custom storage box) is present.
