Meiji Period, circa 1880-1910. A rectangular copper box executed in high relief, likely intended as a tobacco or trinket box. The lid features a dynamic aquatic scene rendered in high relief, depictingcetaceans fish swimming amidst turbulent, raised waves. The long sides of the box are decorated with two detailed dragons (ryū) emerging from waves, separated by a centralized jewel motif (Hōju). The short ends feature swirling wave patterns. The metalwork utilizes contrasting dark patination and gilded accents to enhance the depth and detail of the relief work. The box is unsigned, and no accompanying custom storage box (tomobako) is present.
