A pair of traditional Guernsey Copper Milk Cans, attributed to the maker Martin’s. The globular pitchers are constructed from segmented, hand-riveted copper panels, characteristic of Channel Islands craftsmanship. Both cans feature fixed copper handles and fitted domed lids. They are internally tin-lined, a feature confirmed by the accompanying Martin’s pamphlet which states this process makes the cans fully hygienic. Each can is fitted with a circular, impressed brass or bronze badge on the body, depicting the Guernsey coat of arms (three lions passant guardant) with the text GUERNESEY beneath. The bases are impressed with the maker’s stamp reading MAR TIN’S GUERNSEY. Capacity marks, including a horizontal bar and a circular ‘9’ or ‘G’ type mark, are visible near the handles, indicating specific volume measurements. The lot includes original accompanying ephemera: a worn Martin’s pamphlet detailing the history and sizes of the copper cans, confirming the measurement standard that 1 Pot equals 4 Pints.
