A single octagonal earthenware transferware plate dating to the Victorian period, circa 1887, and associated with the Aesthetic Movement style. The plate commemorates Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. The surface is extensively decorated using black and white transfer printing with minimal hand-painted accents in red, blue, and yellow/maroon. The central design features an allegorical scene flanked by portraits of Queen Victoria and the Prince of Wales. Surrounding the central image are shields representing colonial territories including Australasia, Canada, Cape Colony, and India. Key inscriptions include VICTORIA QUEEN & EMPRESS. JUBILEE YEAR 1887 and the Latin motto UBI VIRTUS IBI VICTORIA (Where there is virtue, there is victory). The lower half features statistical data for 1885 Imports, Exports, Population, and Area, surrounding two hemispheres showing THE BRITISH EMPIRE COLOURED RED IN MAP, centered around a clock marked EMPIRE ON WHICH THE SUN NEVER SETS. The reverse bears the printed marks AS ACCEPTED BY HER MAJESTY and the registered design number Rᴺº 63164.
