Antique Chinese Yi of Yunnan Fly Whisk, circa 1920s. This single traditional dance implement or fly whisk is constructed with a light-colored wooden handle. The proximal end features a long bundle of coarse, dark horse hair, which is secured to the handle by wrapping of sinew or fiber and a short piece of light brown animal hide or fur. The central section of the handle is extensively decorated with intricate glass seed beadwork. The bead palette utilizes white, pink, yellow, red, olive green, and black beads, arranged to form complex geometric designs, including stepped diamonds in the central register. The distal end of the wooden handle contains a small drilled hole with a remnant fiber loop attached.
