This late Victorian to early Edwardian folding utility chair, dating from circa 1890-1910, is constructed from solid hardwood, primarily ash and oak. The design is characterised by a slatted backrest and a D-shaped seat featuring an inset plywood panel. The seat is decorated with a distinctive machine-perforated geometric star pattern, a common feature of the period designed for both decoration and ventilation. The folding mechanism is typical of high-traffic institutional furniture, utilising metal pivot pins and a rear leg assembly that slides within precision-cut grooved tracks inside the main frame. Such chairs were widely used in church halls and public meeting spaces due to their durability and ease of storage. No maker’s labels or stamps are present. Approximate dimensions: 82cm H x 40cm W x 45cm D.
