A large dual-handled commemorative loving cup produced by Royal Doulton, Burslem, to celebrate the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in May 1937. Designed by Charles J. Noke and Harry Fenton, the earthenware body features polychrome hand-painted decoration with high-relief relievo moulded profile portraits of the King and Queen within laurel wreaths. The body is further decorated with commemorative symbols including the Union Jack, the Royal Standard of Scotland, and ringing bells. A banner around the flaring top rim lists nations of the Commonwealth including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and India. Banners below the portraits read GOD SAVE THE KING and ELIZABETH R. The base features a circular Royal Doulton lion and crown backstamp and a full printed inscription: MAY 1937 TO CELEBRATE THE CORONATION OF THEIR GRACIOUS MAJESTIES GEORGE VI and ELIZABETH LOVED AND HONOURED BY ALL THEIR LOYAL PEOPLE. THE EDITION IS 2000 THIS IS NO. 59. This lot includes the original paper certificate of authenticity from Doulton and Co. Limited, hand-numbered 59 and bearing the signature of Charles J. Noke.
