A mid-century ceramic figure of a male guardian lion produced by DeForest of California. The piece is finished in a vibrant, mottled deep teal or turquoise glaze, featuring a seated posture with the right paw resting upon a traditional brocade ball. The expressive face is detailed with an open mouth, white-glazed teeth, and a reddish-pink tongue, while the pupils and claws are highlighted with black pigment. The unglazed, cream-coloured earthenware base bears an incised JR monogram and the numeral 1. This figure exemplifies the Hollywood Regency aesthetic popular in mid-20th century American decorative arts.
