A Victorian sterling silver calling card case of shaped rectangular form by the noted Birmingham maker Edward Smith. The exterior is finely decorated with engine-turned (guilloché) panels within ornate chased borders of scrolling foliate and acanthus leaf motifs. The case features a distinctive scalloped profile and a hinged lid. A central cartouche on the front is engraved with the script “Fanny June 26th 1867”. The interior rim is struck with a full set of Birmingham hallmarks including the maker’s mark ES for Edward Smith, the Queen Victoria duty mark, the lion passant for sterling silver, the anchor town mark, and the date letter q for 1865.
