A German Third Reich Diplomatic and Government Official’s Dress Dagger, Model 1938. This pattern is distinguished from the standard Army dagger by its unique crossguard design, featuring a stylised eagle with its head facing to the viewer’s left, and its smooth, slab-sided grip plates. The hilt is constructed with silver-plated or nickel-plated fittings, now showing a heavy, dark patina. The pommel is embellished with a border of oak leaves. The double-edged steel blade is housed in a steel scabbard with a pebbled finish and two ornate suspension bands decorated with oak leaf motifs. These daggers were intended for wear by officials of the Diplomatic Corps and senior government administrators during formal occasions. A manufacturer’s mark is present on the blade but remains partially obscured by the crossguard.
