Monday 16th March - Antiques, Jewellery, Militaria, Coins, Vinyl, Toys, Ceramics, Collectables
Originating from South Africa, this collection comprises three natural ostrich eggshells, including one hand-painted example and two unadorned shells. The painted egg features a portrait of an African woman in traditional attire, adorned with a beaded headband and multiple necklaces, set against a rural landscape with two traditional dwellings. This piece is signed M Bickell in black pigment. The construction involves naturally formed shells that have been hollowed and cleaned. One plain shell features a small drilled aperture at the pole with a remaining portion of braided brown fibre cord, suggesting its use as a hanging ornament. The second plain shell is intact and features faint handwritten inventory markings in graphite. These items are characteristic of regional craft and souvenir trade from the mid-to-late 20th century. Dimensions: Height approx. 15 cm each.
