A Chinese carved cinnabar lacquer snuff bottle, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. The compressed globular body is decorated in high relief with a galloping horse amongst scrolling clouds and pine branches, set against a finely carved geometric diaper-pattern ground. The shoulders and neck are further embellished with floral and foliate motifs. The piece features a deep red lacquer over a wood or metal core, with brass fittings to the neck and base. The base contains a recessed dark panel with a gilded six-character apocryphal seal mark reading Da Qing Qianlong Nian Zhi (大清乾隆年製), which translates to Made in the Qianlong Reign of the Great Qing Dynasty. The matching cinnabar stopper is fitted with a metal collar and an integrated spoon of pale composite material.
