A cast copper alloy okimono or paperweight depicting a reclining bijin (beautiful woman). The figure is portrayed in a relaxed pose, dressed in a traditional kimono decorated with finely incised floral and geometric patterns, including hexagonal motifs. Her hair is arranged in an elaborate traditional coiffure. The bronze is finished with a deep reddish-brown patina. The underside features a cast rectangular cartouche containing a two-line Chinese inscription from a famous Song Dynasty poem regarding the rewards of academic pursuit: Within books, there are houses of gold; within books, there are beauties like jade (Shu zhong zi you huang jin wu; shu zhong zi you yan ru yu). A square workshop seal mark is positioned below the inscription. This piece represents the cross-cultural exchange of literati values between Japan and China during the late Meiji and Taisho periods.
