A mid-20th century Showa period Japanese oshie relief picture depicting a bijin (beautiful woman) in traditional dress playing a transverse flute. The figure is meticulously constructed using the traditional oshie technique, featuring padded layers of silk and various patterned textiles, including yuzen-style prints and brocade, to create a three-dimensional effect. The subject is set against a background of bamboo stalks and a textured silver-leaf or metallic-foiled paper. The woman’s hair is crafted from fine black fibres and adorned with translucent and metallic kanzashi (hair ornaments). The work is housed within a figured silk matting and a gilded wood frame. No maker’s marks are present. Dimensions: 45cm x 38cm.
