This mid-20th-century Soviet sculpture, executed in the Socialist Realist tradition, depicts the philosopher Karl Marx in a characteristic pensive pose. The figure is shown seated at a desk, leaning forward with a pen in his right hand, captured in a moment of intellectual composition. The work is hollow-cast in an aluminium alloy, a material frequently utilised in the USSR for commemorative art. The exterior is finished with a dark grey, mottled patina designed to simulate the appearance of more traditional cast metals. The piece features an integral rectangular base which is signed in the cast on the reverse in Cyrillic, reading М. Могилевский (M. Mogilevsky). The interior of the casting remains unfinished, displaying the bright, silvery lustre of the base metal.
