A complete and highly detailed ‘The Fantasy of the Crystal’ themed chess set produced by the Danbury Mint. The set comprises thirty-two hand-finished cast pewter figures, each intricately sculpted to represent various mythological and high-fantasy characters. A distinctive feature of this collection is the inclusion of faceted iridescent glass orbs, reminiscent of Aurora Borealis crystal, held or guarded by the characters. The pieces stand upon hexagonal bases, each marked on the underside with the series title, the specific character name (such as ‘Grotwere the Spriggan’), their respective chess rank, and the maker’s mark. The set is housed in its original wooden presentation case, the lid of which serves as the chessboard. The playing surface is framed by a decorative composite border featuring raised runic inscriptions and Celtic-inspired motifs. The interior is lined with deep blue velvet, featuring custom-moulded compartments for the secure storage of each individual piece. This collection was originally released as a subscription series in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Board measures approximately 48cm x 48cm.
