A brass maritime binnacle of the type identified as a Royal Navy Pattern 183, typically utilised for lifeboats or small vessels. The cylindrical housing is constructed from brass with a domed upper section and a wide, circular flanged base containing pre-drilled holes for mounting. The front features a circular glass viewing aperture. Affixed to the side is a rectangular lamp housing designed to hold an oil burner for low-light illumination, topped with a cylindrical vented chimney cap. A small brass identification plate is fixed to the top of the dome. The interior contains a liquid-filled compass card.
