Buyer's Premium:

A standard British issue War Medal 1939-1945, struck in cupro-nickel for service during the Second World War. The obverse features the crowned effigy of King George VI facing left, with the legend GEORGIVS VI G. BR. OMN. REX ET INDIAE IMP. The designer’s initials PM for Percy Metcalfe are visible below the neck. The reverse, designed by Edward Carter Preston (initials ECRP visible at the 10 o’clock position), depicts a lion standing over a fallen two-headed dragon representing the Axis powers, with the dates 1939 and 1945 to the right. As is standard for British issues of this campaign medal, the piece is unnamed. The medal is suspended from its original silk ribbon featuring narrow red, white, and blue stripes. This lot is distinguished by the inclusion of its official transmission document from the Under-Secretary of State for Defence (Armed Forces), issued by Command of the Defence Council. The mention of the Defence Council and the Ministry of Defence (MOD) indicates this is a later official issue or replacement, likely dating from the post-1964 period.
