This lot comprises two antique mantel clocks and two period wooden boxes. The primary timepiece is an architectural mantel clock by the Wm. L. Gilbert Clock Co., Winsted, Connecticut, USA. The ebonised wood case features Adamantine-style faux-marble pilasters, gilt-metal lion mask handles to the sides, and incised decorative scrollwork. The gilded dial displays black Arabic numerals with a slow/fast adjustment lever at the 12 o’clock position. It houses an eight-day, spring-driven movement with a dual strike mechanism on a circular brass bell and a coiled wire gong. Affixed to the front is a brass presentation plaque inscribed: Presented to C.Q.M.S. Pickard by the Officers, N.C.O’s and Men of ‘B’ Co. 2nd/6th West Yorks Regt. on the occasion of his Marriage. April 1st 1916. The second timepiece is an Edwardian balloon-style mantel clock in a mahogany case with boxwood stringing and decorative inlay. It features a white enamel-style dial with Arabic numerals and a time-only mechanical movement. The associated items include a Victorian mahogany writing slope with brass corner banding and strapping, featuring a fold-out writing surface with a gold-tooled black leather insert. Also included is a dark-stained wooden storage box with a brass oval escutcheon and a red tufted satin-lined lid. Gilbert Clock: 29cm x 42cm x 13cm. Balloon Clock: 23cm x 14cm x 8cm.
