A fine example of an Anglo-Indian “John Company” chess set, attributed to the Berhampur region and crafted for the British market during the 19th or early 20th century. The set is meticulously hand-carved from bone, featuring the distinctive “pulpit” style architecture. One side is finished in a natural cream colour, while the opposing side is stained in a deep, rich oxblood red. The Kings and Queens display intricate multi-tiered galleries with open-work carving and crenelated tops. The Bishops are rendered in tall, slender mitre forms, the Knights as spirited horse heads on pedestals, and the Rooks as sturdy castle towers with crenelated battlements. The pawns follow a traditional turned baluster shape. The set is accompanied by a large square game board featuring a textured leather or faux-leather surface in brown and tan squares, finished with a thin red border line. No manufacturer marks or stamps are visible on the pieces or the board.
