This lot comprises two vintage wooden chess sets, each housed in a dedicated wooden storage box. The first is a Staunton pattern set, attributed to the French manufacturer Lardy. The pieces are carved from wood, featuring a natural light boxwood side and an ebonised black-stained side. These pieces are weighted for play, finished in a high-gloss lacquer, and fitted with green felted bases. The set is contained within a light-toned wooden box, possibly beech or oak, featuring finger-jointed corners and a functional metal latch. The second set is a vintage turned wood set of traditional utilitarian design. These pieces feature a simple turned aesthetic with natural and dark-stained finishes and do not have felted bases. This set is housed in a dark-stained wooden box with a slide-top lid. No manufacturer marks are present on either set.
