A Japanese hanging scroll (kakemono) from the Meiji period (1868–1912), featuring a mixed media composition of ink and pigment painting with fine silk embroidery on a silk ground. The work depicts the auspicious subject of red-crowned cranes (tancho) amongst ancient pine branches before a rising sun, a classic representation of the mythical Mount Penglai (Horai-san) symbolising longevity and prosperity. The cranes are meticulously detailed with raised embroidery to define their feathers, creating a luminous three-dimensional effect against the atmospheric painted washes of the mountain landscape. The reverse is inscribed in ink Horai-san-jo-zu (View of Mount Penglai) with a cursive signature and a faint artist’s seal, tentatively read as Shinko.
