Buyer's Premium:

A mid-20th-century Royal Air Force (RAF) decorative wooden display panel, designed for use as a free-standing fire screen or tabletop display. The central hand-painted motif features the official crest of the Royal Air Force, depicting an eagle volant and gaze positioned over a blue garter. The garter is inscribed with the RAF motto, PER ARDUA AD ASTRA (Through Adversity to the Stars), in gold-tone lettering. The crest is surmounted by a Tudor Crown (King’s Crown), firmly dating the piece to the period between the RAF’s formation in 1918 and the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The central emblem is set against a textured, sky-blue background and is framed by a simple red and blue ruled border. The panel is set into a dark-stained wooden frame supported by two integral, forward-facing wooden feet. This item is a characteristic example of Mess Art or private commemorative work produced during the Second World War or the immediate post-war years.
