A large globular ceramic jar produced in the style of Chinese Song or Jin Dynasty Cizhou sgraffito ware. The vessel is constructed from a stoneware or earthenware body finished with a matte black slip. The decorative scheme features large-scale peony blossoms set against scrolling foliate branches and multi-lobed leaves, created by incising through the black slip to reveal the buff-coloured ceramic body beneath. The design is framed by simple concentric lines around the neck and base. The base is flat and unglazed, showing a buff-coloured surface with irregular mottling and some white and black residue. No characters, symbols, or marks are visible on the piece.
