Oil on canvas maritime painting signed F. TORDOFF in the lower right corner. The work depicts a 19th-century style auxiliary steam paddle-ship under both sail and steam power, navigating a choppy green sea with white-crested waves. The vessel is shown in profile flying the British Red Ensign from its stern, with smoke billowing from a central black and red funnel. In the background to the left, the composition features a prominent rocky headland identifiable as the North Shields coast, featuring the ruins of Tynemouth Priory and the lighthouse. A smaller two-masted sailing ship is visible on the horizon to the right under a heavy, overcast sky. The painting is housed in a substantial and ornate gilt-wood frame decorated with scrolling foliate and shell motifs. The verso shows the canvas on its original wooden stretcher with corner keys. A small rectangular paper label is present on the lower stretcher bar, although the text is not clearly legible.
