A Norwegian mechanical action toy by Moeskau Trebearbeiding, Hvaler. The piece depicts a woodpecker perched upon a natural log section. The bird is constructed from carved wood, finished in black paint with a red crest and a yellow-tan beak. The base is formed from a section of a natural log with intact birch bark. The toy features a pull-string mechanism consisting of a braided cord and a turned wooden toggle handle; when the cord is pulled, the bird’s head performs a pecking motion against the log. The underside of the base bears several green ink stamps including an oval mark reading HAND MADE IN NORWAY, and text reading MOESKAU TREBEARBEIDING HVALER TLF 69 37 96 96. A further green stamp reads MONSTER-BESKYTTET NR 72598. The base also features a hand-written signature in blue ink reading G. Moeskau.
