A decorative rapier-style sword produced in the historic metalworking centre of Toledo, Spain. The long, slender blade of square cross-section features acid-etched geometric and foliate patterns at the forte, highlighted with black and red pigments. The base of the blade is marked with the word TOLEDO. The hilt is fitted with a deep, bowl-shaped cup guard, elaborately decorated on the exterior with black and gold-toned damascene-style Arabesque motifs, including scrolling vines and geometric borders. The interior of the guard reveals a simple cross-guard and finger rings. The grip is finished with a black diamond-textured material and a tapered metal pommel. A red felt washer is present at the shoulder of the blade. This item is a mid-20th-century souvenir or display piece typical of the Spanish export market.
