This antique maritime steering wheel is a fine example of late 19th to early 20th-century nautical hardware. Constructed from a light-coloured hardwood, the wheel features eight turned spokes that extend through the rim to form the handles. The outer wooden rim is reinforced with an inlaid circular metal band, likely brass or bronze, which has developed a heavy green verdigris patina over time. The wheel is built around a central cast-iron hub characterised by a square-bore shaft opening and visible pitting from historical exposure. A distinctive feature is the rounded metal cap found on one of the spoke handles, identifying it as the king spoke for midships alignment. Faint, hand-carved lettering is present on the wooden rim, though it remains largely undeciphered. This item represents a functional piece of seafaring history, likely originating from a yacht or small commercial vessel.
