Buyer's Premium:

This is an early 20th-century miner’s safety lamp of a type utilised by Royal Engineers tunnelling companies for monitoring air quality during the First World War. The lamp features a circular brass fuel reservoir at the base, supporting a cylindrical glass combustion chamber protected by five vertical metal bars. Above the glass is a tall, cylindrical steel gauze chimney shield designed to prevent internal flames from igniting external gases. The chimney is topped with a flat, riveted iron cap fitted with a central swivel ring and a heavy-gauge iron suspension hook with a pointed end for hanging from timbering. The upper chimney is stamped with the numerals 1 4 1.
