A shallow hand-formed stoneware bowl supported by three scrolled feet. The interior is decorated with a hand-painted abstract modernist scene against a matt black ground. The design features a central stylised bird rendered in blue and ochre slips with a prominent red eye and pointed beak. Beside the bird is a sun-like face motif with raised, bubbled white and blue crater glaze. The exterior of the bowl is finished in a matt black slip or unglazed textured clay. One section of the rim is finished with a thick, dripped application of a textured, reddish-brown volcanic glaze, while another section displays a turquoise-blue glaze.
