This pair of vintage bar font shields, also known as pump head inserts, represents British breweriana from the late 20th century, specifically the 1980s to 1990s. These units were originally designed to be mounted on beer dispense towers within a pub environment to identify the product on tap and provide backlighting for visibility. The first unit is for Younger’s Kestrel Pilsner Lager, a brand associated with William Younger and Co. and later Scottish and Newcastle. It is constructed with a green moulded plastic housing and a central oval translucent acrylic insert. The graphic displays a kestrel’s head facing right within an oval border, with text reading Younger’s, Kestrel, Pilsner on a scroll banner, and Lager. The white plastic reverse plate includes a mounting bracket and is vertically printed with the word Kestrel in green on both sides. The second unit is for Newcastle Bitter, produced by The Newcastle Breweries. This shield features a dark brown or black moulded plastic housing with a large translucent graphic insert. The graphic shows the brand name in red serif lettering with black outlines, an etching of the Tyne Brewery, and a blue five-pointed star containing the silhouette of the Tyne Bridge. The base banner is inscribed Draught Bitter Brewed by The Newcastle Breweries. The beige rear plate is printed twice with Newcastle Bitter and retains its original electrical cord with a two-pin connector, indicating it was intended for internal illumination.
