A group of brewery collectibles of North East England interest, comprising three two-tone salt-glazed stout bottles and a match striker. The Fielding’s match striker is of circular, domed stoneware form featuring a ribbed abrasive exterior for striking matches. The top rim is transfer-printed in black with PUCK CAPTAIN WEBB MATCHES. The underside is marked with an impressed RD 574861, an impressed M, and a further impressed mark that appears to read No 308. It also bears a black printed backstamp RD NO. 574861 FIELDINGS STOKE-ON-TRENT. The registration number dates the design to approximately 1911.
The collection includes an R. Emmerson Junr. bottle for Newcastle on Tyne, featuring a graphic of a cyclist on a penny-farthing bicycle and advertising The Doctor’s Stout. An Alexander Deuchar bottle for Dublin XXX Extra Stout and Bass & Alsopp’s Ales was bottled in Newcastle, Shields, Hartlepool and Stockton, and features a boar’s head trademark. The John Thompson bottle for The Minister Brand, Blyth, depicts a clergyman with the slogan If Ill Send For The Minister and describes the contents as Stout for Invalids. This bottle retains a wooden cork.
