This Staunton style chess set consists of hand-carved wooden pieces in two contrasting finishes. The dark pieces are fashioned from a heavily grained hardwood, possibly ebony or rosewood, while the light pieces are crafted from a light-coloured hardwood, typically boxwood. The knights feature hand-carved manes and facial features. The set comprises thirty-two main pieces and one additional dark piece. The accompanying chess board is constructed with inlaid wooden squares of contrasting veneers, framed by a wide border of dark wood with a thin black decorative inlay. The set is presented in a rectangular storage case finished in a dark brown leather-effect material with white contrast perimeter stitching. The interior of the case is lined with a brown suede-effect fabric and divided into two compartments, featuring a lid with a magnetic or snap-button closure. No maker’s marks or labels are visible on the pieces, board, or box.
