A collection of post-Second World War British Army uniforms and accessories belonging to the Royal Engineers. The group includes a No. 1 Dress “Blues” uniform, No. 2 Dress Service Dress uniforms, a peaked cap, and associated field gear.
The No. 1 Dress “Blues” comprises a dark blue wool tunic and matching trousers. The tunic is fitted with “stay-brite” Royal Engineers buttons and gilt collar badges featuring a flaming grenade above a scroll inscribed UBIQUE. The right sleeve displays the rank insignia for a Staff Sergeant, consisting of a cloth crown over a padded bullion flaming grenade and three gold-lace chevrons. The trousers feature a broad red wool side-seam stripe.
The No. 2 Dress Service Dress components include two olive drab wool tunics and a single pair of matching trousers. Both tunics are fitted with “stay-brite” Royal Engineers buttons and matching flaming grenade collar badges. One tunic retains its original manufacturer’s label which reads: SUIT NO 2 DRESS MANS, CAT NO 8405 99 973 4639, JACKETS and TROUSERS, JACKETS, SIZE 29, Height 5’9″ to 5’10”, Breast 40″, Waist 35″, H. Edgard & Sons Ltd., A/78/Clo/19738/CT4A, 1967, accompanied by the Broad Arrow (pheon) mark.
Headgear consists of a dark blue wool peaked cap with red piping to the crown. The bi-metal cap badge features the ER cypher (Elizabeth Regina) within a Garter, surrounded by a wreath, surmounted by a St Edward’s Crown, and set above a ROYAL ENGINEERS scroll.
Accoutrements include a webbed stable belt in the regimental colours of red and blue with black leather straps and metal buckles. Also included is an assortment of brass polishing guards (button sticks) used for protecting uniform fabric during button cleaning, including a standard rectangular version and an ornate example with oak leaf cut-out decoration.
