A vintage folding chess set and storage box featuring intricate marquetry and parquetry inlay. The exterior is decorated with geometric patterns including central star motifs within diamond medallions, utilising contrasting wood veneers and bone-coloured inlay. The edges are finished with a sawtooth pattern border. The interior reveals an inlaid playing board with cream and black squares, flanked by two storage compartments lined with red felt. A complete set of hand-carved wooden chess pieces is included, finished in natural light wood and black stain. The pieces, particularly the knights, exhibit a simplified folk-carving style with incised facial features. The box is joined by two metal hinges and functions as both a playing board and a carrying case. The craftsmanship is consistent with Middle Eastern or Mediterranean traditions, such as Damascene work.
