A collection comprising a mid-20th-century mahogany draughtsman’s tool chest and a comprehensive professional archive belonging to Robert Dixon Mather. Mr Mather served as a shipbuilding draughtsman for Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson, Ltd. in Wallsend, Northumberland. The rectangular wooden chest is constructed with brass hardware, featuring a central drop handle and a brass lock plate. The interior contains two lift-out wooden trays housing an assortment of technical drawing instruments, including steel and brass compasses, dividers, plastic protractors, set squares, and scale rulers.
The accompanying archive includes a framed letter of recommendation on company letterhead dated 25th March 1966, detailing Mr Mather’s five-year apprenticeship and subsequent service in the Drawing Office. Technical literature within the lot includes several booklets published by the Association of Engineering and Shipbuilding Draughtsmen with titles such as Design of Ships’ Masts, Ships Speed Trials, and Welding Aluminium Alloys. Also included are numerous diagrams and technical papers related to the 1960 International Conference on Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), various folded ship plans, blueprints, and a large Grouping of Plans chart. Personal ephemera consists of a membership card for the Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson Staff Motor Club, photographs showing Mr Mather and colleagues, and internal company documents.
