A brass mortar and matching pestle set, crafted in the tradition of medieval Persian or Khorasan metalwork. The mortar is of a tapered, cylindrical form, featuring six projecting vertical ribs or buttresses extending from the flared rim down the upper body. The exterior surface is decorated with hand-incised geometric and stylised foliate patterns. The upper sections between the ribs are filled with a repeating concentric semi-circle or scale motif. Below this, a central band features a repeating pattern of stylised scrolls and bird-like flourishes, while the lower section is finished with a band of zigzag and lozenge patterns. The matching pestle is of a turned form, featuring a central knop and a flared base, with the body decorated with incised wavy-line patterns. Faint, illegible incised characters are present on the underside of the mortar. The set is executed in a Persian or Indo-Persian style consistent with 19th or early 20th-century production.
