William Papas (1927-2000), London, a satirical lithograph on toned wove paper, dated 1968. The work presents a dense, panoramic montage of iconic London landmarks, including Big Ben, Nelson’s Column, Tower Bridge, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and the Post Office Tower. The composition is populated with a wide array of caricatured figures representing various social and political facets of 1960s Britain, such as Harold Wilson holding a Go With Labour placard and a figure of Britannia seated in the lower right drinking tea. The scene is filled with period references including newspaper mastheads for The Guardian, Daily Mirror, and The Sun, alongside signs for Portobello, Soho, casinos, and slogans like Make Love Not War. Signed and dated in the plate lower left: Papas 1968. Adjacent to the signature is a caricature of a mouse with a speech bubble reading: WHICH WAY TO AUSTRALIA. The lithograph is housed in a simple white-painted wooden frame.
