A large framed original commemorative photograph documenting home front munitions production by the Wellesley Nautical School during the First World War. The image, likely a silver gelatin print, depicts a large group of boys in Royal Navy style sailor uniforms and instructors in naval tunics and peaked caps posed outside the school buildings in Blyth, Northumberland. Centrally positioned is a large hand-lettered signboard inscribed: WELLESLEY WAR SERVICE, MUNITION DEPARTMENT, 1ST OCT. 1915 – 31ST MARCH 1916, SHELL GRUMMETS COMPLETED 83,700. The board further details quantities for specific shell sizes: 12 inch Double (7,700), 9.2 Double (7,000), 6 inch Double (20,000), 12 inch Single (6,000), 4.5 inch (25,000), 6 inch (12,000), and 9.2 Single (6,000). The foreground features a massive quantity of completed rope grummets, which were used to protect artillery shell driving bands during transport, with several cadets shown holding large calibre shells. The photograph is housed in a period dark wood frame with a gilded inner slip.
