Buyer's Premium:

A maritime study executed in scratchboard with hand-tinted highlights, depicting the cargo steamship Gloxinia navigating past a stone lighthouse situated on a breakwater at night. The vessel displays the funnel livery of the North Shields-based Stag Line Ltd, featuring a white stag emblem on a red ground with a black band. The composition is rendered with fine incised lines to create textures and highlights against the black ground. Hand-tinted colours are applied to the flags, funnel, and navigation lights. The ship name GLOXINIA and vertical draft marks are inscribed on the bow. The characters f e t are inscribed near the waterline. The work is housed in a polished wooden frame with a beaded inner border and a gilt-finished slip. The verso features a plain wooden panel back with a metal hanging ring and remnants of old black adhesive tape.
