Buyer's Premium:

A large nineteenth-century earthenware serving platter from the Beauties of England and Wales series produced by the Hanley-based pottery of J. and W. Ridgway. The central transfer-printed decoration depicts a topographical landscape featuring a ruined Gothic abbey, identified as Llanthony Abbey in Monmouthshire, with two figures in the foreground tending to a horse and cattle. The scene is set against a background of rolling hills and a river. The broad, scalloped rim is decorated with a wide border of dense floral and foliate sprays, interspersed with four cartouches or reserves containing smaller landscape vignettes of ruins and stately homes. The reverse bears a blue transfer-printed mark within a foliate-bordered cartouche reading BEAUTIES OF ENGLAND and WALES.
