A group of four graduated glazed earthenware pharmacy jars or chemist rounds. The collection consists of three larger jars of uniform size and one smaller vessel. Each jar is finished in a deep cobalt blue glaze with contrasting cream-coloured bands at the shoulder and base. The vessels are of cylindrical form with slightly flared feet and are fitted with matching domed lids featuring white-banded button finials. Three of the jars are decorated with recessed white rectangular labels featuring black lettering and gilded octagonal borders, inscribed UNG: SULPHURIS, UNG: ACID: CARB:, and UNG: HYDRARG:. The smaller jar is fitted with a yellow-toned label inscribed UNG.HYDR.AMMON. The term UNG: is an abbreviation for the Latin Unguentum, meaning ointment. No maker’s marks are visible.
