A vintage industrial miner’s flame safety lamp manufactured by The Protector Lamp and Lighting Co. Ltd., Eccles, Manchester. This Type SL model is constructed with a cylindrical brass base and a three-pillar brass frame supporting a clear glass cylinder. The upper chimney and bonnet are made of steel with a black japanned finish, topped with a metal hood and a circular steel carrying handle. A circular brass identification plate is riveted to the chimney and is embossed with the following text: THE PROTECTOR LAMP & LIGHTING Co Ltd, TYPE SL, M & Q SAFETY LAMPS, APPROVAL No. B/120, MAKERS ECCLES. The plate is also stamped with the identification number 78. The glass cylinder features an etched mark consisting of the letters HMP contained within a five-sided shield border, along with partially legible markings including HSH and the number 69. The base includes a heavy central cross-head magnetic locking bolt.
